Mahindra is coming up with a new version of this car by 2020. The new Mahindra Thar will be made to keep in pace with the latest emission norms as well as to make it more affordable.
The current Mahindra Thar has been able to stay in contention with the competition because it offers a balanced mix of power and affordability. It also has that rugged terrain ability that enables it to handle some challenging terrains. The current car will be phased out over time so that there can be a fresh look for 2020 onwards. The work on this car started at the beginning of 2017 and the company has invested Rs 350 crores in this project till date.

Mahindra Thar is Mahindra’s most affordable car yet and comes with such features as power steering, alloy wheels, and dual tone interiors which offer premium cabin space at an attractive price range.
The Indian automobile giant Mahindra & Mahindra is working on a new entry-level trim for its flagship SUV, the Thar. Currently, the base model of the SUV is powered by a 1.5-litre four-pot mill and it is said that this new trim will get a three-pot mill engine as well.
The most anticipated update to the Thar is an entry into an all new third segment of vehicles.
With the new Thar, Mahindra is aiming to widen its market and offer more options to buyers. The new trim will be lighter than the current model and be offered in a rear-wheel-drive layout.
In order to address customer needs, the company is also working on an all-wheel drive (AWD) variant of the Thar for both off-road and on-road use.
One of the main highlights of this upcoming model would be its lighter weight, thanks in part to its rear wheel drive layout.
The carmaker has also announced plans for a full lineup of new variants that will cater for every requirement – from hardcore off roaders for those looking for an enhanced driving experience, to higher spec cars with air conditioner as well as other features which are otherwise not available on this vehicle.
The Mahindra Thar SUV is all set to get more affordable. The company has made a few changes to the powertrain and other features in order to bring down the price.
Just like our ongoing model, the new Mahindra Thar will be powered by an 800cc engine and will also get smaller wheels. However, it will be shorter in length by 160 mm and lower in height by 95 mm. This might make the upcoming car a bit less spacious for passengers but it will definitely make it more affordable.
This is a new base variant of India's most off-road capable SUV. The new base variant, however, will not have a five-speed manual gearbox, instead opting for a four-speed automatic gearbox.
With this new launch, Mahindra aims to reach out to more car enthusiasts who might want an off-roader but cannot afford one. The off-road ready SUV is designed to tackle any terrain and it comes with a list of features such as Hill Descent Control (HDC), Hill Hold Control (HHC), under chassis protection, electronic airbag control (EAC) and electronic stability control system.
Mahindra Thar is a 4X4 SUV offered with a 4WD system. It will be a more affordable option than its ongoing 4-door model. The company expects it to be based on a longer wheelbase and offer a spacious cabin space. It is designed as a multipurpose vehicle loaded with features that are required by customers. One of the best things about this upcoming SUV is that it will have a more powerful 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine. It will be slightly pricier than the regular model but will offer similar handling and specs to some already released models like the Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
